The Italian capital has enforced the Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL in the local acronym). In short, they are several regions in the historical center with heavy traffic restrictions. The goal is to reduce the use of motor vehicles in them to protect the historical structure. Let’s give them a closer look.

Rome ZTL for cars

There are specific streets through which you can enter a ZTL. They will always have signs warning you of its traffic conditions: some of them are active only during certain times of the day. You will have to pay close attention to that, because entering them without a permit will bring you a fine.

Now that we learned about ZTL for buses, it is time to check how do those zones work for cars. There are many others, and each of them has its own rules for traffic:

  • Euro 3 or earlier lorries are not allowed in those ZTLs.

How to obtain permits?

Now that we have covered all the ZTLs in Rome, we can talk about the permits we can obtain so as to drive in them legally. For non-residents, there is the Transit permit category.

This permit allows you to enter and drive in the ZTL, but not park on the street – you will have to search for a private parking garage. The only exception is for school buses, which can park in front of the institution only for students to board and leave the vehicle.

Fully electric vehicles can circulate freely in this ZTL, while Euro 3 and earlier vehicles cannot do it.

You may issue one permit for each vehicle and parking space available (or one for each student in case of a school bus). It is valid for one year for regular users and up to the end of the school year for school buses.

For trucks, this permit has the following cost:
  • Euro 4: € 2.032,00
  • Euro 5: € 1.452,00
  • Euro 6: € 1.152,00
  • LPG, Hybrid, twin-propulsion: € 392,00
