This airport is actually a modern version of the Schönefeld facility. The very first plans for its construction date back to the early 1990s, following the German reunification. It replaced its old version along with two others with a unified airport that features modern infrastructure and much higher capacity. It is also one of the youngest in Europe, being opened in 2020.

How to move in BER airport?

Terminal 1 is the main one in the Berlin airport. It has an U-shape and features sections A, B, C and D – the first 2 are for Schengen use. It is divided into 4 public levels and stays between the runways. There are 118 check-in counters, along with over 100 self-check-in machines.

Terminal 2 was built in four years to focus on low-cost airlines. It has a more basic structure and features more space for check-in counters within a similar external size. This terminal now concentrates both Ryanair and Wizz Air, while Eurowings kept using the Terminal 1.

The former Terminal 5 corresponds to facilities of the old Schönefeld airport. It was opened years ago to relieve Terminal 1’s demand until the covid-19 pandemic started, then closed permanently in 2020. The brand new Terminal 3 is expected to be opened only in 2030.
